The Heartbeat project

Middle School Idea Lab students learned a few new Inkscape skills in the Sticker project that I wanted to solidify so I gave them this Heartbeat project. “Choose something that you love,” I told them, “and download that noun from thenounproject.com.“ Then they needed to follow the instructions to create one “heartbeat” shape, (using skills they learned in the Sticker project) and then duplicate it to add two more beats. We cut these out of acrylic on the Trotec.

To hang this project on the wall, you need itty-bitty holes in the ends and top of your model. It’s quick; it’s fun; and it creates a cool thing to hang on the wall. Who can beat that?

p.s. My cat is black, thus my choice of colors, but students chose brighter colors in opaque and translucent material. One of my students used a dollar sign for his noun and laser cut his heartbeat project out of green acrylic. Welcome to 2022 middle schoolers.

I’m happy to share the step-by-step instructions for this project.
