8th Grade Literature Project

The Literature teacher brought this idea to The IDEA Lab when her students were reading Fahrenheit 451.  She wanted the students to connect to an important character in the book by recreating it in the real world.

This little guy was designed by a team that saw the hound as more like a cat-dog, as they explained it to me.  Yes, it was scary, but in a cute sort of way.

Working Together...

she and I decided that a really cool character in the book was the 8-legged hound.  It's not a very nice character and very unusual. It was a perfect critter to make the book stick.

This team saw the hound as a very large creature, indeed.  Note the spikey tail and ears.  You can't see it in this picture, but there is an arrow-shaped tongue sticking out of its gaping mouth.  It also has a metal collar.

In teams of 3...

students had to design the parts of the hound for the 3D printer.  But first they had to teach themselves how to use Tinkercad.  They had to use precise measuring techniques to get the parts to fit together.  A hot glue gun was originally not in the building plans but, as we reached the deadline, I relented.
